FRAMEWORK FOR CPG SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING
If you’re a CPG food, beverage, or wellness founder, you’ve definitely wondered about the differences between organic and paid social media. You’ve probably asked yourself this at least once:
“Should I be spending my time on organic social media…or would I grow faster with ads?”
The short answer? Most brands benefit from both. Just not at the same time, or for the same reasons.
The long answer? Allow me to break it down.
Organic social media is everything you post without paying to reach more people.
This can include:
On Instagram and TikTok, organic content is one of the ways in which people discover your brand, but its strength is in helping consumers get to know you and decide if they trust you.
Organic social is not about quick growth; it’s about building trust, providing social proof, and maintaining your position in the market.
It helps you:
For pre-launch and early-stage CPG brands, organic social is the lowest-cost, highest-leverage marketing channel you have.
Paid social media is when you pay platforms to distribute your content to a specific audience.
The value isn’t just in the increased reach; it’s in the ability to target specific audiences who are likely to interact, click through, and make a purchase. This can be especially valuable in the very beginning before you have a decently-sized organic audience, but most pre-launch brands don’t have the funds.
This includes:
Most CPG brands run paid ads on Instagram and TikTok.
Paid social is designed to:
Paid social is for amplifying what’s already working. It’s not going to fix or compensate for poor organic social media. Another way to say that: if your organic content, messaging, or product-market fit is unclear, ads will just help you burn money faster.
Organic social should come first if you’re pre-launch or early stage. Before spending the funds on ads, you need clear messaging, a proven ideal customer profile, and an idea of the content that resonates with those customers. Consider organic social media to be your free testing opportunity.
Being bootstrapped is another reason to make organic social media your priority. If every marketing dollar absolutely has to count, organic social media gives you compounding returns, reusable content, and so much insight that you can use for ads, email marketing, paid search, PR, or your website.
If you’re selling a product that requires a lot of education, stick to organic until you have more cash flow. Organic content allows you to do a lot more explaining, test what messaging converts best, and ultimately will improve your ads down the road.
Paid social works best after your organic social media accounts are established, growing steadily, and you know what’s working.
When you have posts that perform consistently, high engagement, lots of profile visits, and those profile visits are consistently leading to website clicks, it’s time to start using paid social.
But if you’re launching something new, paid social can increase brand awareness and visibility.
What I’ve seen work best is starting with organic social media and implementing paid social once you have a proven marketing framework.
Before you start paid social, you need:
This approach helps you keep marketing costs down, improves the performance of your paid social ads once you start, and over time creates a stronger brand presence. You don’t want to amplify the wrong message, do you?
